Exploring Forest Park: The Backyard Playground Portlanders Love

🌿 An Urban Forest That Defines Portland Living

Bordering the western edge of the city, Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the country. With more than 5,000 acres and 80+ miles of trails, it’s not just a park — it’s part of daily life here.

As a Portland Realtor, I spend a lot of time talking about neighborhoods, schools, and housing trends. But what truly makes this city special are places like Forest Park. Whether it’s an early morning hike on Leif Erikson Drive, a weekend trail run on the wildwood, or a quiet walk under the towering Douglas fir of the Trillium Trail, this park offers a reset button just minutes from home.

🏡 The Neighborhood Connection

Living near Forest Park means nature isn’t something you plan for — it’s something you step into. Communities like the Alphabet District, Arboretum Hills, St. Johns, and Linnton border the park directly, giving residents immediate access to trailheads and forest views. I happen to live in St. Johns, which I truly love. One of my favorite parts of being here is how easy it is to cross the iconic St. Johns Bridge and head straight onto the Ridge Trail.

Many homes near the park sit along quiet, winding streets lined with mature trees, and it’s common to see neighbors heading out with hiking boots or dogs in tow. The park fosters a subtle but meaningful sense of community, as people swap trail tips and seasonal favorites. Even for those who don’t live right along its edges, knowing this much protected wilderness is nearby adds to the everyday appeal of Portland living.

🌲 More Than a Park — It’s a Lifestyle

Forest Park shapes how Portlanders live. It encourages us to slow down, get outside, and connect with our surroundings. For many buyers relocating here, that access to nature is a major reason they choose Portland in the first place.

It’s also a place that changes with the seasons — misty and moss-covered in winter, vibrant and green in spring, cool and shaded in summer, and golden with falling leaves in autumn. No two visits feel the same. That consistency and beauty are part of what makes Portland unique. Forest Park isn’t just a landmark on a map — it’s woven into the daily rhythm of this city and the people who call it home.

It’s where friendships are formed on group hikes, where kids learn to love the outdoors, and where longtime residents return again and again to familiar trails. In a growing city, having this much protected wilderness at our doorstep is something Portlanders don’t take for granted.
